Kerala Sociological Society

The Kerala Sociological Society (KSS) was formed in 1971. It is a professional body of sociologists in Kerala, established to promote teaching and research in Sociology and to raise the status of the profession in the State and the country with membership from the rest of India as well as abroad. 

The credit for its inception goes to Dr. P.K.B. Nair, Rev. Dr. Jose Murickan SJ, and Rev. Dr. Joseph Puthenkalam S, the senior most Sociologists in Kerala. They were ably backed by Prof. Mariamma Joseph, Prof. John Kattakayam, Rev. Sr. Marie Cecile, Prof. C.J. Mathew, Rev. Sr. Samuel.

Kerala Sociological Society was registered as a non-profit making society under the Travancore-Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act (XII) of 1995 (Reg. No. S93/1975).

The major objectives of the Kerala Sociological Society

Since 1972, organizing the annual All Kerala Sociological Conference became one of the regular features of the activities of the Society.  Important contemporary social issues were selected as conference themes and eminent sociologists of all India repute were invited to deliver keynote addresses. From the 17th annual conference in 1989, election of the office bearers of the Society has been held every two years.Currently, Society has about 300 Life members.

Over the years, Kerala Sociological Society has made rapid strides in promoting its objectives. Besides publishing a biannual journal – The Kerala Sociologist – since 1973, it has brought out two publications: Perspective in Sociology (1977) and Industry and Society (1982). The Society has instituted the following awards to be given away in every annual conference:
